Biography

Jane Rhoades began painting seriously in her teenage years in order to cope with a difficult adolescence. Born and raised in Denver, she attended a public school high school, finding her life's passion in drawing and painting classes. She threw herself into the practice, devoting hours to painting and volunteering in art-oriented special education programs. After graduating from University of Denver in spring 2020, she is fervently applying for calls of entry and marketing her work. If she's not in the studio, she's probably baking something needlessly complex or picking through thrift store shelves for weird and forgotten objects.

Artist Statement

My practice has evolved to heavily rely on using my body as a painting tool, removing the distance and mediation that a brush or other long utensil creates. Although I create a variety of paintings in oil, acrylic, and experimental media, all the work I produce is a direct recording of my own existence. It functions as a physical exploration of existential terror as a physiological sensation, as well as a method for processing uncomfortable ideas and feelings. For example, in an attempt to cope with the idea of impending mortality and complete immersion in the ordinary, I expressively monumentalize the ephemera of lived experience to interrogate how mystery, emotion, memory, and intuition form the consciousness over time. The tactile, vivid compositions mimic a latent fingerprint by frequently painting with my hands, as if each piece were holding the suggestion of the maker even after they have gone. In paintings where I still use conventional materials, I abstract forms, almost to the point of obscuring their true nature, allowing an interplay between the tangible and the ethereal, the known and the enigma, the artificial and the organic.
