Hey there! I’m Jane Rhoades and I am mostly an oil painter.
However, I also work in textiles–including sewing, quilting, knitting, and crochet–and I have recently started working in digital illustration! I was diagnosed with ADHD as an adult, and this condition has affected most parts of my life and art practice. Because of this, I find myself drawn to experimenting with new mediums, techniques, ideas, and skills to expand my practice as a whole.
I usually paint portraits and still lifes, but sometimes I experiment with abstract compositions to take a break. I love creating dreamy moods in my work by using vivid colors, dramatic lighting, and visible brushstrokes. I prefer the alla prima painting technique, meaning I try to not let the paint completely dry between sessions and hopefully finish an entire painting within a few days in only three or four layers of paint.
Recently I started to apply my oil painting skills to a new frontier for me–digital art. I’ve spent my time testing different settings, brushes, formats, and styles. Right now, this work is mostly studies and practice, but I do offer character illustration commissions as well.
My art delves into the spaces of joy, pain, absurdity, vibrancy, loss, and self-reflection we experience in life through the themes and subjects to explore are domestic scenes, food and pleasure, emotional intimacy between the self as well as in relationships–usually all in a tongue-in-cheek way. Painting has been my ultimate passion for eight years and is as essential to my identity and survival as breathing is.
In terms of textile work, I do some modern sewing projects and quilts but primarily focus on historical reconstructions of garments usually from the Renaissance, Regency, and later Enlightenment periods. I want to make my quilting and garment-making practices into a more artistic direction, incorporating contemporary principles of visual art into a fashion framework to create some beautiful and crazy stuff!
You can find my paintings, prints, as well as crocheted/knit/sewn items in my shop or in my Etsy storefront. I am also active on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook where I post works in progress, finished art, and the multitude of projects I’m always working on!
